The first exhibition in the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art’s Art and Emotion series, Are you lonely tonight? I’m so lonesome I could cry., borrows its title from lyrics popularised by Elvis Presley—a poetic homage to Robert Weiss’ observation that loneliness is more often explored by songwriters than social scientists. Delving into the exhibition’s theme of loneliness, the concurrent publication highlights the work of the eleven exhibiting artists from around the world—Giddeon Appah, Polly Borland, Seth Brown, Lucy Liu, Nick Mullaly, Natasha Matila-Smith, Kayla Mattes, Callum McGrath, Melissa Nguyen, Patrick Pound and Kelly Yu—and extrapolates on concepts introduced by their word through new writing commissions. Featuring pieces that together span science fiction, creative, reflective, fiction and academic writing by nine authors, the exhibition catalogue captures the spirit of loneliness that is at once subjective and collective. Writers include Judy Annear, Claire G. Coleman, David Haworth, Beau Newham, James Nguyen, Katie Paine and Bridget Thompson, as well as exhibition curators Sophie Prince and Myles Russell-Cook. Ultimately, Are you lonely tonight? I’m so lonesome I could cry. brings together diverse practices and voices in dialogue, offering moments of vulnerability, isolation, and longing.
